In the News – What does success look like?

A new type of school was started recently in Albuquerque and the first graduating class is this year. The news was doing a story on it and the Mayor declared the school is a success.

His basis for this?…All 26 graduates are going to college!!

Uh, if high school graduates enrolling for college is the criteria for success…I know many unsuccessful high school graduates.

My point to this and many other blog posts is not to be critical and negative. There is more than enough of that out there. Instead, I want to look at what is being done out there and challenge us to be different. To be godly. To be salt and light. We need to have a different mindset (Colossians 3:1, Romans 8:5-8) and be challenged and encouraged to live differently.

It is easy to get caught up in the thinking of the world. Hey, going to college is great. Wow, all graduating students are going to college. That’s fantastic…and so on. We may even get so excited we want to send our kids to that school. Of course, there is much more to look at before sending your kids somewhere.

So, do we consider things and look deeper than what the world is feeding us? Have we considered if we should send our kids to college, and if so, what does that look like? Which college, what area of study, what about taking on debt to send them? Factors like that and many others weren’t considered by the Mayor. It should be considered by me. How about you?

    Hi~
I agree that success doesn’t need a college degree, although sometimes it helps depending on what field you feel led to pursue in this earthly realm. Choosing a college that is Christ-centered and financially affordable would be my two top criteria too. Is there such a place out there?

Most young people put Christ on the back burner when they enter college, which is so sad for their overall success and wellbeing. I had the privilege of taking part in the Baptist Student Union in our community college and this provided the balance for me!

I never finished getting my degree because God led me to marry a Pastor and for us to start our family. He also provided a way for me to be a stay-at-home Mom all through my children’s formative years by teaching us to live below our means, which wasn’t too shabby even on a Pastor’s/Handyman’s salary! I pray that more parents will “sacrifice” the opportunity to accumulate “stuff” in favor of Mom staying home with the kids ~ choosing who raises your children is a vital responsibility that should not be taken lightly!

I’m so proud of my son Daniel and his wife Kim who home school their children. I had this privilege, as well, for four years of my children’s life. I think it make a positive difference in all our lives. Life offers many choices, but only a few really pay positive dividends.
